Calls for Intervention in Arrests of Fishermen in Gaza

author Thursday May 31, 2012 13:44author by Sarah Snobar - IMEMC & agencies Report post

The General Union of Palestinian Workers in Gaza demanded that human rights organizations intervene immediately to stop attacks on Palestinian fishermen that occur every fishing season.

The Union condemned the Israeli occupation’s policy of arresting fishermen and confiscating their belongings as well as interrogating them. The Union claimed that this policy was aimed at decreasing this line of work in Gaza.

The Union released a statement in which it said that the Israeli navy intentionally arrests fishermen and confiscates their property to create unemployment in the fishing sector and decrease the number of fishermen in general. It also said that arresting and shooting fishermen is a standard policy that Israel uses.

The Union denounced the arrest of 4 Palestinian fishermen by the Israeli navy on Wednesday morning. The fishermen were working off the coast of the town of Beit Lahia in Gaza, which is considered Palestinian waters.
