According to Hamas officials, the blast was provoked by an Israeli air strike, however Israel Radio said the premature detonation of a car bomb may have been the cause.

An Israeli military spokesman had no immediate comment on the incident.

The man who died was identified as 27-year-old Mohammed Jamal al-Nimim, from the Shati refugee camp. Several other Palestinians were injured in the incident.

The Israeli military has targeted Palestinian cars in air strikes in previous rounds of clashes.
