The Israeli online daily, Haaretz, reported that the protest was organized by the Higher Arab Monitoring Committee, and that this protest is considered the largest since October 2000. The Israeli police were extensively deployed throughout the area, and set up roadblocks at the entrance of the city. Haaretz said that the police decided to allow the protesters to carry large Palestinian flags and black flags, but forbade them from carrying flags that represent Arab political parties in Israel. Israeli Knesset (Parliament) Member from the Balad Party, Jamal Zahalka, said that the Israeli Prime Minister, Ehud Olmert, his Defense Minister, Ehud Barak, and the Israeli army chief of staff, Gabi Ashkenazi, should be put on trial for their “role in killing civilians in the Gaza Strip”. Furthermore, Mohammad Barakeh, chairman of the Hadash party, stated that the protest is important, as it represents an advanced stage of the struggle of the Arab population, and the forces for peace against the massacres conducted by the Israeli Army against the people of Gaza. Barakeh added that this protest is part of the Arab rejection of occupation and racism, and added that Israeli Arabs are in the country and will always be there. It is worth mentioning that thousands of Israelis protested on Saturday in Tel Aviv, and expressed their rejection to the ongoing Israeli military offensive in Gaza. After gathering at the Rabin Square in Tel Aviv, the protesters shouted "Barak, Barak, Defense Minister, How many children have you murdered today?", and “Stop the killing, Stop the bombings”, according to Haaretz. |
