Kristalina Georgieva, of the European Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response, stated Tuesday that the European Commission decided to allocate €58 million to help the Palestinians affected by the ongoing conflict in the Occupied Palestinian Territory and in refugee camps in Lebanon.

Georgieva stated that the financing shows that Europe cares about what is happening in the Middle East, and that the European Commission for International Cooperation believes its help for the helpless residents is very important for saving lives and in reducing the suffering in several hotspots around the world.

She added that the aid goes to those who need it, regardless of their race, religion, nationality, ethnic origin and political affiliation.

Projects funded by the Commission are implemented by several non-governmental relief groups that specialize in United Nations Agencies in addition to the Red Cross.

The allocated funds are used to relief segments of the population in occupied Palestine and the Palestinian refugees in Lebanon.

The relief also includes psychosocial support for children, and access to basic health services in addition to access to clean water.

Support provided by the European Commission is very crucial in the Middle East; its humanitarian donations and support arrived to more than €500 million since the year 2000.
