Egypt Uncovers Tunnel Meant For Smuggling Vehicles Into Gaza

author Monday December 14, 2009 12:59author by Saed Bannoura - IMEMC & Agencies Report post

Egyptian security sources reported Sunday that the Egyptian Border Police located a border tunnel meant for smuggling vehicles into the Gaza Strip.

The sources told Reuters that the entrance of the tunnel, wide enough for vehicles to drive through, was located 300 meters away from the border line with Gaza.

Egyptian border policemen were posted at the entrance of the tunnel after sealing it, and will remain instated there until the tunnel is demolished.

Egypt located and demolished a similar tunnel nearly six weeks ago.

The Egyptian Authorities believe there are hundreds of siege-busting tunnels located across the border, and that they are used for smuggling goods and supplies into the besieged coastal region.

Some Egyptian sources reported that Egypt is installing an underground iron fence along the border with Gaza in an effort to prevent the Palestinians from digging new tunnel's leading into its territory.
