Israeli media sources reported on Sunday afternoon that a Palestinian homemade shell landed on the Israeli town of Sderot, adjacent to the Gaza Strip.

Right after the firing of the homemade shell, Israeli defense minister, Ehud Barak, ordered the closure of Gaza's crossings for one day Monday, the sources said.

Israeli radio reported that one Israeli resident was shocked and evacuated to hospital, as a small-scale blaze broke out due to the shell fire.

The Alquds Battalion, a newly-emerged Gaza-based group claimed responsibility for the homemade shell on Sderot, stating in a statement, emailed to press, that such a fire came in response to the continued Israeli attacks on the Palestinians.

" a group of our own managed to fire a homemade shell towards the Sderot town", the statement read.

Palestinian homemade shells have come to a halt since June19,2008, as Palestinian resistance factions and Israel agreed to an Egyptian-brokered ceasefire. Many commentators believe the ceasefire is shaky for Israel has not lifted the blockade imposed on Gaza for the past 15 months.
