Departing Military Commander Calls For Tougher Stances Of Settlers

author Thursday October 22, 2009 09:17author by Saed Bannoura - IMEMC & Agencies Wikipedia Report post

The departing Israeli Military Central Command Chief, Maj. Gen. Gadi Shamni, stated Wednesday that Israel should show no toleration to fundamental extremist settlers in the West Bank, and should show zero tolerance for their actions.

Gen. Gabi Shamni

His statements came during a ceremony marking the end of his service as the Central Command leader as he will be occupying the post of Israel’s military envoy to the United States. His statements angered the radical settlers who said that Shamni is the last person who can lecture them of ethics and democracy. During his service as Central Command leader, the settlers repeatedly rallied in front of his home whenever he issued a restraining order against them. Israeli Ynet News reported that Shamni received several hate letters from the settlers, and that one of the letters accused him of being ‘anti-Semitic Jew Hater’. Other letters would describe him as “Arab lover”, and “Devils offspring”.
