Researcher and specialist in detainees’ affairs, Abdul-Nasser Farawna, stated on Monday that the Israeli Authorities released detainee Nora Al Hashlamoon, 37, after nearly two years imprisonment under administrative detention orders without filing any charges against her.

Al Hashlamoon, from the southern West Bank City of Hebron, was kidnapped on September 14, 2006 and was imprisoned under administrative detention orders which were renewed for nine consecutive times.

She is a mother of six children and her husband Mohammad is still imprisoned under administrative detention orders since September 2006.

Farwana stated that Al Hashlamoon was repeatedly asked to choose between remaining under administrative detention or be deported o Jordan along with her children for three years. She refused to be deported and carried repeated hunger strikes. The most recent hunger strike was in March this year and lasted for more than twenty days.

She carried the hunger strikes in protest to being detained without any charges or trial and in protest to the attempts to oblige her to accept deportation instead of being imprisoned for an undetermined period.

Furthermore, Farwana stated that there are currently 800 detainees who are imprisoned under administrative detention orders. Most of them are detained in the Negev Detention Camp and are facing harsh living conditions and repeated violations.

Israel started using administrative detention against Palestinian political detainees in 1967; it based the administrative detention policy on Article number 111 of the Emergency Law which was imposed by the British Mandate in 1945.
