Egyptian security sources reported on Tuesday that Egyptian border police at the crossing between the Gaza Strip and Egypt have uncovered seven underground tunnels on Monday night.

The tunnels were connecting the northern and southern parts of Rafah, a city divided by the Gaza-Egypt border. Police sources said that during the operation to uncover the tunnels, two people were arrested while trying to smuggle food, gasoline, and medicine.

Since Israel placed the Palestinian coastal region under total siege 11 months ago, Palestinians have used those tunnels to smuggle basic survival items into the Gaza Strip.

Israel claims that those tunnels are used by Palestinian resistance factions based in Gaza to smuggle weapons into the occupied region.
