Palestinian sources reported that the son of Marwan Al Barghouthi, a Fatah leader imprisoned by Israel, was shot and mildly injured by the Israeli army gunfire on Friday at night near the central West Bank city of Ramallah.

Al Barghouthi was driving to Ramallah when Israeli troops fired rounds of live ammunition at his vehicle.

The Israeli army claimed that soldiers manning a checkpoint near Ramallah ordered Al Barghouthi to stop, but he fled and his car collided with another vehicle.  Israeli army radio denied that troops opened fire at Barghouthi, but Witnesses confirmed that soldiers opened fire and wounded him. Marwan Al Barghouthi, the father of Qassam, is a leader of the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah party, and has been imprisoned by  Israel since May 2002.

Barghouthi was kidnapped by the army in the West Bank city of Ramallah on April 15 2002, and on June 6 2004, Barghouthi was sentenced to five life-terms.
