Rockets fired from Lebanon into Israeli town; bomb explodes in LebanonTwo incidents took place Tuesday morning in which Lebanese fighters targeted both the United Nations and Israel. The political leadership in Israel has connected the two attacks with the planned arrival of U.S. President George W. Bush in Israel Wednesday.
A roadside bomb exploded in southern Lebanon on Tuesday morning, injuring two workers with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon. Soon after, two rockets were fired from southern Lebanon into northern Israel, damaging one building but causing no injuries.
These are the first rockets fired into Israel from Lebanon since June 2007, when a previously unknown group called the Jihadi Badr Brigades fired two rockets into Israel, causing no damage.
During the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 2006, more than 4,000 rockets were fired by Lebanese fighters with the Hezbollah movement into northern Israel. 40 Israeli civilians were killed by the rockets. Over 1200 Lebanese people were killed in the Israeli invasion, at least 1,000 of whom were civilians. The entire infrastructure of the Lebanese nation was destroyed by the thousands of Israeli bombs that were dropped into cities, towns and villages. Although no group has claimed responsibility for Tuesday's attacks, Israeli officials have stated that they believe the Jihadi Badr Brigades may be responsible. |
