The reason, according to human rights activists, is that the company, based in the Israeli-occupied Syrian territory known as the Golan Heights, is pillaging water resources that actually belong to Syria. Israeli forces captured the Golan Heights in a 1967 war and have been occupying the territory in violation of international law since that time.
The contract with the City of Edinborough is worth $325,000, and supplies water coolers to schools and offices in the city.
Mick Napier, chairman of the Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign, stated, "I am outraged that money is being given to reward Eden Springs. This company pillages the water of an occupied territory." The company did not deny that their operation is based in the Golan Heights, but stated that the particular water that was being sold to the City of Edinborough was sourced in the UK, not Golan. |
