A resident of Zaa'tarah, Tafesh had been kidnapped by the Israeli army from his home a few days earlier. He was released a year ago after four years imprisonment in the Israeli jails and was elected as a legislator with the Hamas bloc. He took part in the talks that were held last year between the Fatah and Hamas movements, in which a Palestinian national government was formed, but ultimately failed after the U.S. and Israel refused to recognize it. Four other Hamas members, residents of the West Bank city of Bethlehem, were also sentenced to six months imprisonment without charge by the Israeli army. Israel is holding over 1,000 Palestinians in what they term 'administrative detention'. Under this system, they are held without charge for periods of six months that can be continuously renewed without explanation or charge. Some Palestinians have been held without charge in this way for years.
