Marwan Barghouti: prisoner release must be top priority at Annapolis

author Wednesday November 14, 2007 16:59author by PNN - IMEMC News Report this post to the editors

Ashraf Ajrami, Palestinian minister of detainees and ex-prisoners, on Wednesday met with Fatah leader and Palestinian Legislative Council member Marwan Barghouti, in his Israeli prison cell to discuss the upcoming Annapolis summit and the efforts of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to resolve the issue of Palestinian political prisoners.

Barghouti told Ajrami that securing the release of all prisoners must be placed at the top of the negotiation agenda at the upcoming conference, reminding the minister that detainees were a key part of any peace settlement, and warning the Palestinian negotiating team of the danger of repeating previous mistakes.

Barghouti, a former Tanzim leader, was abducted in Ramallah on April 15, 2002, and charged with the killing of five Israeli citizens. Throughout the case, Barghouti refused to present a defense, instead arguing that the trial was illegal and illegitimate. In the end, he was sentenced to five life terms.

The imprisoned Fatah leader is popular across the spectrum of Palestinian factions and had been the subject of many campaigns, Palestinian, International and even Israeli, to secure his release from captivity.Translated by Manar Jibrin-IMEMC News
