Barghouti told Ajrami that securing the release of all prisoners must be placed at the top of the negotiation agenda at the upcoming conference, reminding the minister that detainees were a key part of any peace settlement, and warning the Palestinian negotiating team of the danger of repeating previous mistakes. Barghouti, a former Tanzim leader, was abducted in Ramallah on April 15, 2002, and charged with the killing of five Israeli citizens. Throughout the case, Barghouti refused to present a defense, instead arguing that the trial was illegal and illegitimate. In the end, he was sentenced to five life terms. The imprisoned Fatah leader is popular across the spectrum of Palestinian factions and had been the subject of many campaigns, Palestinian, International and even Israeli, to secure his release from captivity.Translated by Manar Jibrin-IMEMC News |
