The U.S. government apparently decided on Tuesday to send out invitations to would-be attendees of the Annapolis peace summit, stated an unnamed Palestinian official on Tuesday.  The official added that the Summit will likely be held on November 26th.

Speaking to the Agence France Presse agency, the official revealed “the U.S Secretary of States, Condoleezza Rice, has informed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, during their meeting yesterday, that Washington is set to send the invitations for the peace summit”.

He said that Rice will return back to the region in mid November to complete the preparations for the conference, mainly securing a joint Palestinian-Israeli document on core issues of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert announced on Tuesday that he would meet with the Palestinian President, just one week prior to the scheduled conference.

Olmert hinted that Syria’s participation is welcomed, saying “it is a good thing”.

And Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas stated in a joint press briefing with Rice in Ramallah on Monday that there has been some progress in terms of preparations for the summit.  He added that the conference will mark a start of a genuine peace process.

Rice, for her part, echoed the same, saying “the Annapolis conference will be a launching pad for Palestinian-Israeli negotiations, leading eventually to the establishment of a Palestinian state, living side by side in peace with Israel”.

Palestinians and Israelis are yet to agree on core issues such as the return of Palestinian refugees, the borders of the Israeli state and the status of Jerusalem.

Israel deems the agreement unnecessary, while Palestinians want a time frame of six months following the summit to reach a final status settlement.
