Seema Anbas, head of the Detainees Study Center, reported on Monday that a number of female prisoners announced a hunger strike in support of detainee Amna Mona, who is currently being held in solitary confinement in the Israeli al-Ramla prison.

In a letter addressed to the Center, the detainees stated that the protest is an effort to exert pressure on the Israeli authorities to cancel a recent order extending the solitary confinement of Mona, who is suffering from severe physical and psychological problems.

Mona, herself, announced her own hunger strike last week.

The woman was kidnapped by Israeli forces on January 17, 2001. Israeli authorities claim that she planned to lure an Israeli citizen to the West Bank city of Ramallah and kill him.
