Sources close to Abbas stated that the visit comes as part of a campaign aimed at coordinating and consolidating Arab opinion regarding the upcoming Annapolis conference.

The visit, which started on Sunday, is the first leg of a tour that will take in Syria, amongst other countries.

Abbas told Kuwaiti TV on Sunday that an agreement with the Americans to implement the first phase of the US-brokered Road Map peace plan, in return for a joint Israeli-Palestinian negotiating document, had been reached.

Chief Palestinian negotiator Ahmad Quria met with the left wing Israeli Meretz party on Sunday, warning of the possibility of an increase in violence should the upcoming negotiations fail.
