Dr. Duwiek: Israeli prison authorities spy on legal consultations

author Thursday October 25, 2007 17:11author by Ameen Abu Wardah - IMEMC News Report this post to the editors

Dr. Aziz Duwiek, the President of the Palestinian Legislative Council, who is being held in an Israeli detention camp, said on Thursday that the prison administration spies on talks between kidnapped Palestinian lawmakers and their lawyers.

Dr. Duwiek said that, during his latest legal consultation, the director of the detention facility had instructed his lawyer to talk only about legal issues. When his lawyer asked if he had listened in to the conversations with his client, he was told "No, but I have read them."

This is an indication that conversations are recorded systematically and then transcripted. This act is considered to be illegal under international law regarding lawyer-client confidentiallity. Translated by Ghassan Bannoura – IMEMC News Room
