Palestinian PM meets Russian Vice Foreign Minister in Ramallah

Palestinian sources in Ramallah city, north of Jerusalem, reported on Tuesday that Palestinian Prime Minister, Dr. Salaam Fayyad, met at the presidential headquarters in Ramallah with the Russian Vice Foreign Minister Alexander Saltenov.

Fayyad informed the Russian officials on the sharply deteriorating economical conditions in the Palestinian territories as a result of the international embargo imposed on the Palestinian territories.

Fayyad also told Saltenov that there are more than twelve thousand  detainees imprisoned by Israel, facing daily abuse and attacks, and informed him on the Monday attack carried by Israeli soldiers against the detainees in the Negev detention facility. One detainee was killed and several hundreds were injured.

Moreover, Fayyad informed Saltenov that the Palestinians are preparing for the Annapolis peace Conference in the United States, and added that the Palestinian leadership is interested in the success of the conference.

Also on Tuesday, Fayyad today met a French delegation headed by Mr. Pierre Duquesne, the French Official Representative in charge of the preparation of the upcoming donor conference in Paris.

Fayyad outlined to Mr. Duquesne the Palestinian government’s efforts in institution-building and economic development and indicated his appreciation to the Republic of France for offering to serve as the host of this upcoming meeting.

Saltenov and the Russian representative at the Quartet, Sergey Yakovlev, arrived in Israel on Sunday and met with Aharon Abramovitch, Director-General of the Foreign Ministry and with Pinchas Avivi, Deputy Director-General and head of the Division for Central Europe and Eurasia.

 On Monday, the two officials also met with the Israeli Vice Prime Minister, and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Tzipi Livni, and with the Israeli Defense Minister, Ehud Barak.
