Detainees in Huwwara and Salem detention facilities facing bad health conditions

Secretary-General of the Palestinian Popular (Folk) Committees, Azmi Shiokhy stated on Tuesday that Palestinian detainees imprisoned in Huwwara and Salem Israeli detention facilities are facing bad health conditions due to the lack of medical attention.

In a meeting with dozens of families of detainees imprisoned by Israel, Shiokhy said that the detainees are facing daily hardships and assaults by Israeli soldiers manning the detention facilities and added that sick detainees are not provided with any medical attention.

He added that the detainees complained that the Red Cross did not visit them since a long period.

Shiokhy stated that detainees in Salem detention facility are placed in overcrowded rooms and are facing ongoing violations by the soldiers and the administration.

He said that there are 29 detainees imprisoned in five small rooms that lack proper ventilation and that each room is barely wide enough for a maximum of four detainees.

Shiokhy also said that some detainees are suffering from depression, and psychological issues due to the Israeli policy of physical and psychological pressure against them.

The detainees are only allowed to leave their rooms for three hours each day, and are not allowed to use the toilets during nights hours.

He also said that some disabled detainees are suffering from urine infections which causes involuntary urination, but the administration is not attempting to help them are provide them with any medical assistance.

Shiokhy also said that the detainees are not provided with sufficient food, and the food which is provided to them is of a bad quality and lacks the basic nutrition components.

He demanded several human rights groups and the international Red Cross to intervene and stop the illegal Israeli practices against the detainees.

Shiokhy also stated the President Mahmoud Abbas considered the issue of the Palestinian detainees as a top priority in any talks with the Israeli leadership.
