Welcome to Palestine Today, a service of the International Middle East Media Centre, www.imemc.org, for Tuesday September 25th, 2007.

The Israeli army invades several West Bank cities and kidnaps civilians while the Palestinian resistance in Gaza attacks Israeli targets, these stories and more coming up stay tuned.

The News Cast

The Israeli army attacked and searched Palestinian homes in the southern west Bank city of Hebron and the nearby village of Sourif on Tuesday morning, kidnapping seven civilians. Four people were kidnapped when the army attacked Sourif village. Among them was the Mayor, Mohamed Al Houar. Another three were kidnapped in Hebron city center after the army stormed and ransacked a number of houses.

Also on Tuesday morning the Israeli army kidnapped two Palestinian civilians as troops invaded the village of Beit Fajar, south of city of Bethlehem in the southern part of the West Bank. Later in the day Israeli forces invaded the town Al Doha near Bethlehem and kidnapped one Palestinian man after attacking his home. Israeli sources clamed that the man is an Islamic Jihad activist.

In the northern part of the West Bank, Israeli troops kidnapped six Palestinians in Nablus on Tuesday morning. One of the men, a member of the Al Qassam brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, is thought to be on the Israeli's most-wanted list.

In the same operation, troops kidnapped five Palestinians from Balata refugee camp and Beit Iba.

In Gaza today Dr. Haidar Abd esh-Shafi, a prominent Palestinian leader died in Gaza hospital after a two year struggle against cancer in. Abd eSh-Shafi, 88, was a highly respected secular nationalist leader and non-partisan figure in Gaza, although he was close to the Palestinian Peoples Party (former communist Party). He was also a founding member, along with Dr Mustafa Barghouti, of the Palestinian National Initiative (Mubadara) which was launched in Ramallah in 2002.

On the ground the Palestinian resistance fired several home made shells at Israeli targets near the Gaza strip on Tuesday, no damage or injuries were reported.
