According to the Yediout Ahronot Israeli online daily, the decision has been coordinated between the Palestinian Authority following a meeting between Palestinian Prime Minister, Salam Fayyad and Israeli defense minister, Ehud Barak.

Deployment of PA forces has been blocked over the past several years in light of deteriorating security situation in the West Bank, where Israel maintains a large military presence.

Israeli authorities permitted a Palestinian police force yesterday to carry out arrests in the West Bank city of Nablus, which is under complete Israeli security control.

According to the 1993 Oslo peace accords between the Palestinians and Israel, Israel would be in security control of many West Bank cities, towns, villages and refugee camps, within areas classified as ‘C’, as the PA would maintain full or partial responsibility over areas ‘A’ and ‘B’.
