David Sehayek, an officer in the Israeli Border Police, was on Monday sentenced to 20 months on prison for ordering the robbery of several shops in the southern West Bank city of Hebron four years ago.

The officer was prosecuted by the Jerusalem District Court after pleading guilty on charges of theft and abuse of power.

A further member of the Border Police, Ofir Eden, was sentenced to nine months for related charges.

The two were ordered to pay compensation of NIS 3,000.

Following the Hebron agreement in 1997, the city of Hebron was divided into two sectors; one under the control of the Palestinian Authority (H1), the other remaining under the control of the Israeli military (H2). In the years following the second Intifada, the Palestinian population of H2 decreased greatly, due in large part to restrictions on movement, so-called “sterilised” streets barred to Palestinian use, constant attacks by illegal Israeli settlers, and continuous acts of aggression by Israeli forces in the area.
