The Hamas movement on Tuesday banned any public prayer rallies organized by Fatah, after the previous two protests descended into violence.

Hamas justified the decision, apparently supported by the pro-Hamas Palestinian Clerics Federation, in a press statement, arguing that Fatah had used the gatherings to create chaos and sedition in the coastal region.

Hours before the ban was announced, approximately 100 Palestinian women protested against Hamas recent actions in the coastal region.

The protest, thought to have been organised by Fatah, sharply criticized Hamas for its perceived infringement on civil liberties and the freedom of the press.

The demonstration passed without incident.

For the last two Fridays, protestors have clashed with Hamas-affiliated Executive force, leaving many injured and several arrested, among them two journalists.
