Hamas has authorized jailed leaders to commence with negotiations designed to secure the release of captive Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit.

Speaking with the Dubai-based newspaper Al Khaleej on Friday, Hamas parliamentarian Ayman Dararma indicated that the movement was ready to begin negotiations on the criteria which would facilitate the release of Shalit, adding that representatives had already met with Israeli officials on a number of occasions.

Any deal on Shalits release is expected to include a prisoner exchange.

Shalit was seized by Palestinian resistance fighters during a raid into the Gaza Strip on June 25, 2006.
