Israeli army fires shells on northern Gaza

Israeli army fired on Sunday evening a number of shells in northern Gaza Strip, targeting a group of civilians in Beit Hanoun and a local cemetery in Jabalya refugee camp

Palestinian media sources and witnesses said that Israeli warplanes, hovering over Beit Hanun, fired at least one missile on a group of civilians, leaving no injuries.

Witnesses said ambulances and rescue squads rushed to the scene immediately.

An Israeli tank shell was fired as well on a local cemetery in eastern Jabalya refugee camp in northern Gaza.

No injuries were reported, as some damages were caused in the area, media sources confirmed.

The Gaza Strip has been recently on high alert after Israeli army officials threatened to carry out a ground offensive on the region, following a collapse of a six-month-old ceasefire.

Palestinian resistance groups in Gaza and Israel have recently exchanged attacks after Israel killed three weeks ago 9 Palestinians in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

On Friday, Israel extra-judicially assassinated three Islamic Jihad members in the West Bank, to which the resistance groups insist a ceasefire should be expanded in order to observe calm in the territories.

Palestinian presidency condemned the attack, saying it would devastate efforts to observe calm.

Following an Israeli massacre of 19 Palestinian civilians in Beit Hanoun in November9, 2006, both Israel and the Palestinians agreed to a ceasefire.

The ceasefire could halt Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip and stopped resistance groups’ homemade shells fire onto nearby Israeli towns.
